Victor M. Chaltain

Victor M. Chaltain passed away peacefully at his home in Alexandria Bay, New York, on January 28, 2026. He was born on November 2, 1947, at E. J. Noble Hospital in Alexandria Bay to Jack and Pauline (Cramer) Chaltain.

Victor is survived by his three children: Victor (Rushell) Chaltain,Chaumont, NY, Valerie (Greg) Walls Standford, KY, and Torrey (Lynn Riddell) Chaltain,Standford, KY; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Jacqueline Chaltain Texas, Marie Chaltain Alex Bay, and Johanna Bullock Houston, Texas. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Jerry and Richard Chaltain. He was also predeceased by his beloved best friend, “Boo,” who held a special place in his heart.

A lifelong resident of Alexandria Bay, Victor graduated from Alexandria Bay Central School and proudly served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1974, receiving an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he earned a degree from SUNY Potsdam. Victor worked various trade jobs before returning home, where he found his calling as a full-time bartender at the Islander and Skiffs. He greatly enjoyed this role and the people he met, dedicating approximately 35 years to the job.

Victor’s greatest passion was the St. Lawrence River, where he was known as a true “River Rat.” He loved fishing and spending time at his island in Goose Bay. When not working or on the river, Victor could be found enjoying a few beers with family and friends, and playing pool, darts, chess, or golf.

A Celebration of Life event will be held on Saturday, February 7th from 2-5 at the John B. Lyman Post 904 American Legion, in Alexandria Bay.

Memorial donations may be made in Victor’s name to the John B. Lyman Post 904 American Legion.
