Marilyn Roxann Ledger Shortt

Roxy, as she was always known, was born in Theresa, NY to the parents of Riley Ledger and Dorothy Reed, the 5th generation of each family. She attended several country schoolhouses in the town of Alexandria and the Redwood High School. In 1951, at sixteen, she graduated from Alexandria High School with four years of honors.

Born during the great depression, from a very young age she assisted her grandmother with Ledger's Cottages in Goose Bay at such laborious tasks as hauling and storing ice in an ice house for the chests in the cottages, lawn maintenance with push mowers and grass shears, even bailing out septic tanks. The stories she could tell. Roxy never shied away from hard work and eventually became the owner of the business which she continued to run for many years until it was sold.

In 1960 she married her husband of 66 years, Paul Shortt, also of Goose Bay. In the same year they began working for the Weymss family of Morgan Island closely followed by the birth of their children, some of her fondest memories that she always spoke about. In 1966 they purchased a home in Alexandria Bay and have resided there since.

While raising their two children Roxy was employed by various businesses in the area working at Pine Tree Point, La Boutique, Boldt Castle and others. One of her last jobs was at the River Edge Resort and she took great pride in working for a four-diamond rated hotel.

Roxy was a true ambassador for the Thousand Islands, always willing to engage in conversation that promoted the scenic beauty and history of the surrounding area she so loved and enjoyed. In a cruel twist, she lost her sight to macular degeneration leading to Charles Bonnet syndrome and further complications.

In addition to her husband Paul, Roxy is survived by a son, David (Christine) Shortt, and daughter Marilyn (Jeff) Schaaf, grandchildren Amanda Schaaf, Dillon Shortt and Gregory Schaaf and two great grandchildren Allison and Porter Shortt. She also will be greatly missed by brothers George Ledger, Riley (Cindy) Ledger, sisters Candy (Carl) Bogart, Cappy Ledger, brothers-in-law Charles (daughter Kellie) Shortt, and Jon (Margie) Shortt, as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Roxy also leaves behind her forever friend, Donna Donegan.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her infant brother Ronald Ledger, brother James Ledger, brother and sister in law Earl and Elaine Shortt and sister in law Loretta Ledger. Per her request, after cremation there will be no calling hours or services.

She has left her earthly bonds and will forever be our Angel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alexandria Bay Rescue Squad in Roxy’s name and mailed to 110 Walton St., Alexandria Bay, NY 13607
