John W. Slate

John W. Slate, 61, passed away early Saturday morning, September 6th .

He was born February 18, 1964, in Alexandria Bay, son of John F. and Montessum Gouge Slate. He graduated from Alexandria Central High School in 1982. He married Lisa Neville on October 27, 1990, at St. Cyril’s Church in Alexandria Bay.

In his younger years, John captained a tour boat for Empire Boat Lines, Alexandria Bay. He later ran his own charter fishing operation, Sure Thing Fishing Charters, based in Alexandria Bay. His son, Capt. John F. Slate, continues to run the business to this day.

John was a member of the Alexandria Bay Fishing Guides Association, played in the Men’s Hockey League, coached Alexandria Bay Minor Hockey, and was an avid waterfowl hunter and fisherman.

Besides his wife Lisa, he is survived by his son, John F. (Allyson Thomas) Slate, Alexandria Bay, his daughter Gabrielle (Chuck) Livingston, Dexter, a brother, Fred (Sharon) Slate, Alexandria Bay, and two grandchildren. A brother Mark Slate predeceased him.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 18th , from 4-7pm, at the Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. A funeral mass will be said Friday, September 19th at 2pm at St. Cyril’s Church.

A shore dinner will follow the mass on Morgan Island at Kring Point State Park, please bring your own chair.

Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the Alexandria Bay Guides Association (45652 Otter Street Alexandria Bay, NY 13607).
