George "John" Umstead

George “John” Umstead, 89, Redwood, NY, passed away early Saturday morning, October 31st, at River Hospital in Alexandria Bay.

John was born on September 4th, 1937, in Syracuse, NY, the son of George R. and Eva Davis Umstead. He was educated in the Redwood school district.

John married Beverly Smith on June 6, 1959 at the Burrville Congregational Church. He was a carpenter and worked for a number of years for the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, on the restoration of Boldt Castle on Heart Island. Gardening , baking, and woodworking were among the things he enjoyed.

John is survived by his wife, Beverly; his son George Brian (Kristy) Umstead, Alexandria Bay; his daughter Cindy (David) Johnson, Alexandria Bay; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother Michael J. Umstead, Redwood; sisters Connie Short, Alexandria Bay, and Barbara Keil, Redwood. Brothers Gerald, Robert, and Bruce predeceased him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 14th at 11:30 am at the Reformed Church of the 1000 Isles, with a luncheon immediately following.
