Dr. Donald N. Mantle

Dr. Donald N. Mantle, 94, Alexandria Bay, passed away at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown, where he had been a resident for the past four years.

Donald was born on April 28,1932 in Harrisville, NY, the son of Clarence and Agnes Wight Mantle. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1948, attended Utica College of Syracuse University, graduating in 1952 and then went on to graduate from Syracuse College of Medicine in 1956.

He married Oleta A. Abernethy on December 20, 1955, in Carthage, NY. Mrs. Mantle passed away on January 15, 2013.

Dr. Mantle served in the United States Air Force from 1959 until 1966, as a Flight Surgeon, earning the rank of Major. The family moved to Alexandria Bay in 1966 as he took the position of General Surgeon for the Thousand Islands Medical Group based out of the former E.J. Noble Hospital.

Dr. Mantle was a past member of the Alexandria Central School Board of Education, the E.J. Noble Hospital Board of Directors, and a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was an avid outdoorsman with a great love for the St. Lawrence River and strawberries. He was proud to have built his own log cabin and cut his own firewood for many years. He was a faithful SU Sports fan as well as a Boston Red Sox fan.

He is survived by his son David W. (Nancy) Mantle, Pittsford, NY, a daughter, Robin Mantle, Alexandria Bay; and grand-daughters Kristin Mantle, Reading, PA, and Traci Mantle, Fairport, NY. Besides his wife, Oleta, he was predeceased by his brothers Frank and Malcolm Mantle and sister Margaret McDonald.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 28th from 1-3 pm with a memorial service beginning at 3:00 pm at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. Reverend Jeffrey McIlrath will officiate.
