Dr. Christopher P. Shields

March 17, 1950 — September 3, 2025

Redwood NY & Redington Beach, FL

Dr. Christopher “Chris” Shields, 75, passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

From a young age, Chris was drawn to helping others, exploring the world, and embracing adventure—passions that guided him to a remarkable 45-year career as a leading Emergency Medicine physician in New York City. Known for his skill, compassion, and humor, he treated every patient with dignity and respect, reminding them that they were cared for by a person, not just a doctor. Equally dedicated to education, Chris mentored generations of residents, shaping countless medical careers along the way.

Chris was widowed by his beloved wife, Becky Serens. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh C. and Elizabeth D. Shields; his sister, Mary Susan; and his brother, Thomas.

He is survived by his siblings Elizabeth Astolfi (Douglas), Michael Shields (Carol), Stephen Shields (Alicia), Catherine Squires (Gary), Barbara Shields, Peter Shields (Ace), John Shields (Gina), and Joseph Shields (Amy). To his dozens of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, he was simply “Uncle Chris”—beloved, funny, and always present with encouragement, mischief, and love.

Chris also cherished lifelong friendships with Mary McDonald, Karen Monna and Joe Thibeduau, and Matthew Menza. His family is profoundly grateful to Dr. Fred Marshall at Strong Memorial Hospital and the dedicated team of caregivers who provided such excellent support over the past five years.

A proud graduate of Monroe Community College, Chris often credited MCC as the launching pad for his academic and medical career. In his honor, his family has established a scholarship fund in his name: In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Dr. Christopher Shields to the Monroe Community College Foundation, 1000 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, N.Y. 14623. Memorial gifts will be directed to a scholarship in his memory.

Chris asked that his life be celebrated in the warm months at the family lake next summer. Until then, his family and friends will miss his kindness, generosity, quick wit, adventurous spirit, and steadfast love.
